Post Traumatic Stress

In this video, Dr. Christian Heim, discusses post traumatic stress, burn out and fatigue in the healthcare provider and provides suggestions to manage the day to day experiences that can result in difficulties as the stressors accumulate.

Doctor Christian Heim PhD, BMed (Hons), AMusA, BMus, MMus, FRANZCP, is a consultant psychiatrist with nineteen years of clinical practice experience in Mental Health in Australia. He holds the position of Associate Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland. A Churchill Fellow and recipient of innovation awards, his areas of expertise include alleviating the effects of personal trauma, particularly war trauma and childhood sexual abuses, and couple’s therapy where mental illness is involved. Currently, his practice is in hiatus, he is concentrating on lecturing, research and a clinical trial into
vicarious trauma in emergency nurses. Formerly, he was a classical musician and lecturer at several universities. He continues to play music and recently gave an all-Chopin piano recital at Brisbane City Hall. He writes books, posts
and has a podcast series with the aim of preventing mental health issues in the greater community. www.drchristianheim.com

Trauma in Pregnancy

In this video, Dr. Cathleen Khandelwal discusses the many challenges for first responders and emergency healthcare provides when dealing with pregnancy and trauma.

Dr. Khandelwal currently serves as the Trauma Medical Director for Cleveland Clinic Fairview Medical Center.  She has been with the Cleveland Clinic for the past six years and is always excited to share and educate our prehospital and medical staff.

Military Resuscitation

In this video, Dr. Moorman discusses military resuscitation.  Dr. Matthew Moorman is a General Surgeon with subspecialty fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care and Medical Education. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and is the Chief of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio.

Prior to entering healthcare, Dr. Moorman served as an F-16 pilot. He has deployed multiple times, participating in combat flying operations in the middle east and during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. He is now a 30-year veteran of the United States Air Force and Ohio Air National Guard, currently serving as the Commander of the 178th Medical Group in the rank of full Colonel. 

 

Pediatric Burns

In this video, Dr. Charles Yowler discusses the challenges in assessing and treating the pediatric patient suffering from mild to serious burn injuries.  Dr. Yowler has decades of experience treating burn patients in both the civilian and military environment.

Dr. Yowler, MD, FACS, FCCM is a Professor of Surgery at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.  He currently serves as Director of the MetroHealth Adult and Pediatric Burn Center in Cleveland, Ohio.  His research interests include outpatient burn care, surgical critical care and surgical infection.

Spinal Trauma

In this video, Dr. Deborah Benzil discusses management and challenges with spinal injuries including discussion on neurosurgical considerations.  Dr. currently serves on staff at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Deborah L. Benzil, M.D. FACS, FAANS is known nationally for her work in spine stereotactic radiosurgery, innovation in resident education, diversity advocacy, and socioeconomic expertise. Before joining the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Benzil served as a partner practicing with MKMG/CareMount Medical. She provides comprehensive, state-of –the-art, patient centered care to patients with a wide-spectrum of neurosurgical diseases at award winning hospitals. She has served as faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery, Columbia University Medical Center where she developed and introduced the first comprehensive socioeconomic course for neurosurgical residents. She is currently Professor of Neurosurgery at CCLCM.

2020 NOTS Annual Report

In this video, Dr. Matthew Walsh, our 2019-2020 Medical Director, reviews the data in the annual NOTS report, highlighting the positive impact of collaboration in trauma care.

Dr. Walsh is currently Chairman of General Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.  He came to Cleveland originally to train in HPB surgery with Robert Hermann, prior Chair of the Department of General Surgery.  He continued in the Department as faculty for the balance of his career, rising to Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University and awarded the Rich Family Distinguished Chair in Digestive Disease.  His interests lie in pancreatic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, endoscopy and education.  He has been honored with several teaching awards including the highest teaching excellence awards of the Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University.
